Our Community
From raising tax revenues and lowering overall pricing on goods, to boosting customer traffic at surrounding stores and creating new jobs, Walmart takes every opportunity to be a good neighbor. As a retailer, employer, and business leader, we know we can make the greatest impact by making changes right in the neighborhoods where we work and live.
At Walmart, a philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally prevails. The greatest impact can be made when businesses and people support causes that are most important to the local community. Walmart is truly a member of the community in all of the local economies the company serves by providing financial and volunteer support to more than 100,000 charitable and community-focused organizations. Walmart also provides opportunities for customers and company associates to give back.
Walmart believes in providing support to hundreds of local community organizations with financial aid and is committed volunteer efforts—a formula for making the most meaningful impact. Through our philanthropic programs and partnerships, the Walmart Foundation supports initiatives focused on enhancing opportunities in education, job skills training, sustainability and health. In fiscal year ending 2009, Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation gave $378 million to communities across the United States.
National Giving
Clinton Global Initiative
Walmart actively supports the Clinton Global Initiative’s commitment to advances in the areas of energy and climate change, global health, human rights, and poverty alleviation. In March 2008, the Walmart Foundation awarded a $500,000 grant to the Clinton Global Initiative University to fund the work of students who are contributing to these areas. By supporting such research and innovation, we are working to ensure a more sustainable future for all global citizens.
Walmart Heart
Walmart Heart is a volunteer program that one of our truck drivers started to help people with chronic medical conditions. Our drivers make these individuals “honorary Walmart drivers,” visit their homes and give them the ride of a lifetime in a Walmart truck. Today the program includes more than 100 drivers who have reached out to thousands of individuals.
Military Support
We recognize our servicemen and women have one of the most difficult, and important, jobs in the world. That’s why we partner with organizations such as Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and America Supports You to ensure our troops know how much all of us appreciate their sacrifice and that we are thinking of them every day. Nationwide, we work with organizations on several projects, including our in-store Wall of Honor and message books, to acknowledge the contributions America’s military families make to our country.
Local Programs
Feeding America
Walmart has partnered with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity, and we’re enlisting our entire network of supercenters and Sam’s Club locations to help with this nationwide effort. By the end of 2009, the food donation program will include all of our locations and neighborhood markets, allowing us to donate an estimated 90 million pounds of food—the equivalent of 70 million meals—to families in need.
