“My wife and I wanted to do something to positively impact the community in 2002 so we started a job training program for community residents on weekends. I am an telecommunications/IT engineer and my wife was employed as a social worker. We started teaching basic computer skills with computer business applications. When we located a vacant building on the Englewood/Auburn Gresham neighborhood, we needed a lot of things to make this happen. An employee at one of you suburban stores learned about what we were doing and arranged for the store to donate $2,000.00 to this effort. We were able to purchase a LCD projector, and enough books to train 30 people. The success of those original people resulted in more than 170 people being trained since then. We still train on weekends and other engineers and professionals have volunteered in this work. We are now training everyday community residents to achieve IT and Data Networking certifications in addition to computer usage classes. Over 130 people that we have trained have been gainfully employed. And yes, we still use the LCD projector. Even when it fails, we will not throw it away because it was instrumental in the service to our community. So I would like to say THANK YOU and ask you to keep fighting to bring the Walmart into our community. We need it and the people that I see at our center could also benefit.”
